My First Fit Blog

Hot rod culture is alive and well in cycling and over the years I’ve dealt with issues of discomfort, repetitive injury, and poor handling performance from purchases based on what looks cool.  I am in a difficult predicament in that I am being paid to critique poor purchasing decisions to my client who has invested hundreds if not thousands of dollars only to find that their individual flexibility, range of motion and structural blueprint were and should not have been left out of the original equation. I have recently divorced retail and set out to solely offer my specialty, bike fit, as a means to fix the engine and tweak the chassis.   While my findings over the last 25 years are far from scientific, I have worked with racers who take the skin off broccoli and with client’s who refer to the drops and chain rings as “curlies and cookies.” Each of these clients has very different goals but is equally passionate about their sport.  So, whether you speak in watts or ride for a cause, my solitary focus is to produce the most harmonious interaction between bike and client.  Sometimes you just need an expert’s tough love to tell you that you can’t ride Contador’s bike if you can’t touch your toes.  I’m that guy.

My mission with this blog is to answer, address and highlight the most common fit issues from all walks of life i.e., saddle sores, bike size versus geometry, cramming fitness, fit or fashion, etc.    As the days grow shorter (and colder), we can’t ignore that most of us are riding a summer fit with our winter bodies.  Like an eyeglass RX, your fit will change over time and needs to be consistently addressed.    I welcome any and all fit questions. Enjoy the ride.

  1. Hey Tad, Wonderful to find your blog and see that there are more of us out there. I too have forsaken retail upon realizing that I only wanted to promote "cycling", not products. My operation is only getting rolling now, but I look forward to empowering the good citizens of western NC through proper fitting services in short order. Nice to meet you. Keep up the good fight.
